Renewing Your Car Insurance Policy: How Does it Work?

Published on 16 November 2022

Doesn’t insurance renewal time seem to come around fast? Every time the notice comes through the letterbox, it feels like there’s new information to process and terms to understand. Sifting through the various options can be challenging, but at Liberty Insurance, we work hard to make it as easy as possible, which is why 200,000 satisfied customers renew with us every year*.

We’re the insurance company that offers the freedom to choose and the freedom to keep changing. That means helping you manage change, with three simple steps to a fast, uncomplicated renewal:

  1. Read Through the Paperwork

We know that life is busy, and that your schedule is full of everything from upcoming birthdays to exam timetables and dentists’ appointments. That’s why we remember your renewal date for you — saving you the need to put a reminder in your calendar. We’ll send out your renewal quote 30 days before it’s due, giving you plenty of time to read through the details and contact us with any questions you may have.

We try to make our paperwork as concise as possible, but we also have key information we want to share with our community every year. We know it’s hard to find the time, but it’s important that you do read through the paperwork to fully understand how you’re protected. We also recommend not leaving it too close to the renewal date in case you have changes to make.

  1. Check Your Details

Once you’ve had time to go through the paperwork, make sure you contact us with any changes that could affect your car insurance policy. Bear in mind that many things can impact your renewal quote, from personal choices such as your type of car or number of named drivers to external factors, including the rising costs of repair. And remember, our team is on hand to help you understand your quote better if you have any questions.

The quickest way to alter your renewal details is online — all you need is your policy number and an internet connection. We can then update your quote to make sure you’re fully protected.

If you haven’t made a claim in the last year, you should also check to see if you can avail of a No Claims Bonus (or No Claims Discount). This is a reduction in your policy cost that you can earn by holding a policy in your name without any claims. It builds up in years, so the more years you drive without any claims, the bigger your discount will be, up to a limit of nine years.

  1. Click to Renew

When you’re satisfied that the information on the quote is correct, the next step is to proceed to renewal. Our online portal is the fastest, simplest, and easiest way to renew and is available 24/7 for our busy customers. Of course, if you’d prefer to speak to our experienced customer care team, they’re available on 1890891890 six days a week: Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. For either option, you’ll need to have your policy number, date of birth, and vehicle registration number ready.

Once you’ve renewed your policy, you can rest easy knowing that you’re protected when you set off in your car every day. But don’t forget, in order to comply with Irish law, you must also display the tax disc that we send you in the post. With so many bills, circulars, and junk mail arriving daily it’s easy to miss the envelope, so make sure you keep an eye out for its arrival and put it in your car straight away. You’ll need to display it clearly in the windscreen so that it can be viewed easily by An Garda Síochána or other authorities.
