Liberty Insurance Camogie All-Stars Roundup

Published on 17 November 2017

Following the end of this year’s Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Camogie Championship, the best and brightest players from across the country packed into the Citywest hotel on November 4th for the Camogie All-Stars banquet.

In the run up to the event, the pinnacle of the sporting off season, All-Ireland champions Cork dominated the nominations list with 11 players named. On the night, All-Ireland runners-up Kilkenny received four All Stars, with semi-finalists Galway receiving two, and Dublin finishing with one. The Cork ladies claimed a fantastic eight places in this year’s All-Stars Team selection.

Among those were some Camogie legends; Cork captain and right back, Rena Buckley claimed her fifth All-Star award; Gemma O’Connor collected a record 10th All-Star Award to move her ahead of Wexford legend Kate Kelly at the top of the All-Stars Awards Roll of Honour. Other players selected from the champions were Ashling Thompson, Katrina Mackey, and Orla Cotter, winning their second, fourth, and fifth All-Star places respectively.

Rena Buckley was also named Player of the Year after becoming the first player to captain Cork to both the football and camogie titles.

All-Ireland runners-up Kilkenny were represented heavily throughout the spine of the team with Catherine Foley at full-back, Anne Dalton claiming a fifth All-Stars Award at centre half-back, Meighan Farrell in midfield and Katie Power at centre-half-forward.

Galway’s two places were held by the Championship’s top scorer Ailish O’Reilly at right corner-forward and Aoife Donohue at left corner-forward. The team was completed with a Dublin forward, Aisling Maher, who was rewarded for her key role in the Capital’s run to the All-Ireland semi-final.

Finally, Cork’s Paudie Murray was named Manager of the Year for the second time after guiding the Rebels to a record 27th All-Ireland title.

A big congratulations from us all at Liberty Insurance to those who were successful on the night! We’ll be rolling out footage of our chats with the All Stars from the Liberty Blue Carpet on our social channels over the next week, so keep an eye for your chance to get to know the stars!
